Casey, a roller derby player, spoke to IGHMS studentsInver Grove Heights Middle School started an advisory class to teach 8th grade girls confidence, improve their academic and social skills, and inspire them to succeed. The STAR (Striving Toward Academic Responsibility) advisory class hears from strong female speakers each month for Motivation Tuesday. Throughout this year, students will hear women from the community talk about their personal stories around themes such as “the power of forgiveness” or “you cannot change what you do not acknowledge.” This month, Casey of the Dagger Dolls roller derby team spoke to the students about how changing your behaviors or attitudes can change the way people see you.

Casey showed the students what roller derby is and how joining the team sport helped her better manage her daily life. She also told students stories of personal obstacles and struggles that taught her the importance of her attitude and decisions.

“There’s a path of good choices and a path of not-so-good choices,” she said. “You can always decide to go over to the path of good choices no matter how far down the other path you may be.”

Casey also shared how she handled her obstacles, including teaching students power stances.
