Inver Grove Heights Middle School buildingAVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) provides best practices for teachers and schools to use to better prepare their students for college and career. Each summer, the organization holds summer institutes in major cities to update teachers on new practices and help teachers share their own experiences and ideas. Summer institutes also invite students to attend as student leaders to give teachers a student perspective on AVID practices. Last year, the Minneapolis AVID Summer Institute selected two students from Inver Grove Heights Middle School as student leaders. This year, two more students were selected to share their experiences with teachers from around the Midwest.

IGHMS 8th graders Lexi Young-Guevara and Aja Moore applied to be student leaders and were selected to help at the Minneapolis AVID Summer Institute this July. The students will share their AVID experiences and future plans with attending teachers to give them an idea of how teachers can better help their students. The student leaders will also have a chance to network with other AVID students from all over.
