The Simley girls golf team finished out a record season on Monday by accomplishing another first for the program, the highest ever finish in the section tournament. Highlights from the two day tournament were plentiful for the Spartans. Freshman Anna Ahern posted her two best rounds of the year, including her personal best as a Spartan on Friday that helped the Spartan team earn their entry into the finals. Four of the six team members improved on their Friday scores in the finals on Monday. This included Rachael Wolfe who powered her way around the course, hitting towering drives that caught the attention of everyone watching. Junior Britta Iverson, who heard lots of cheers from the crowd as she birdied 3 of the last 11 holes. Along with Senior Captain Annika Iverson, who got sweet revenge against the unforgiving green side bunker on the 17th hole when she feathered a perfect sand shot across the green, nestling near by the difficult back pin location. Senior Captain Emma Johnson claimed the shot of the day, coming within inches of holing out an iron shot from 100 yards on the par five 6th hole, leaving a tap in birdie that helped her shoot one of the best rounds of the tournament. The record team effort was highlighted by the record play of Seventh Grader Isabella McCauley, who’s brilliant two day play allowed her to capture medalist honors for the tournament, and advance to the State tournament next week at Bunker hills. Congratulations to the entire team on a season well played, and good luck to Isabella next week at State.

Simley Trap Team Season Summary and State Competition

Memorial weekend was the final week of the 5 competition week season for the trap team! This year we had 57 athletes registered from grades 7-12. We had a fun season and want to recognize the following for their accomplishments. Two athletes Brady Boyer and Nick Haugo completed perfect rounds of 25 of 25 during the season. Taking the Top gun male and female honors for the high average is Scotland Garrick with a 203/250 target total and a 20.3 average and Danielle Ungurian with 170/250 target total and 17.0 average per 25. Great job to these two top performers. In trap an average of 19.0 or higher is considered Varsity level and this was accomplished by the following: Scotland Garrick(20.3), Brandon Burger(19.5), Ben Tinucci(19.4), Mason Moland(19.3) and Nathan Mathison(19.3). Junior Varsity level(15.0 – 18.99) was led by Andrew Bergum 189/250 and a 18.9 average and Danielle Ungurian 170/250 target total and 17.0 average. Novice level(<15.0) was a tie with Nathan Germaine and Nikki Muller with 141/250 and a 14.1 season average. The Spartan team will be represented by 26 members of our team at the Minnesota Clay Target League Championship in the 7A division on June 18th in Alexandria. We are very excited to see if we can break into the trophy ranks again in 2017 with either individual efforts or team top 5 scores in each category! Special Thanks to McKenna Lewis our student team manager! Final season results will be posted to the Simley Athletics website Trap Team section under the activities tab. Go Spartans!
