New Announcements

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Since the tragic events last month in Florida, many people, young and old, have been speaking out about making schools safe for all students. As a response to this call for action, there is a national movement calling for a 17-minute “walk-out” this Wednesday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m. There has not been a great deal of student conversation at the middle school about this, we want to be as proactive as possible.

While we value a student’s right to free speech and peaceful assembly, we also want to ensure that we have as little disruption as possible to our school day. As an alternative to “walking out” we have put together a brief 10-minute conversation within all classes at the middle school. The topic of this conversation will be “How can the IGHMS community work together to keep our school a positive and safe place”.

We have created a list of talking points for staff in order to keep the conversation focused on what we can do rather than what lawmakers should/should not do. The student list includes:

Post only positive things on social media

Show respect, if you do you will likely get respect back

Be kind to each other

Develop more patience

Develop your communication skills to problem solve rather than react with anger

If you see a friend change how they normally act, say something to get them help

Talk to an adult about stressful situations or conflict between two people

Walk in the halls at all times (including going to and from lunch)

Do not horse play in the halls – hands and feet to yourself

The list for staff includes:

Celebrate our successes – focus on the positive rather than the negative

Monitor the hallways

Welcome all students in our classrooms

Investigate possible areas of conflict/threats

Take things seriously when reported by students

Staff have been told not to allow the conversation to turn political or about guns/gun violence. We want our conversations to be more proactive and positive.

In the event that students leave class, normal attendance procedures will be followed. Students who leave class will receive an unexcused absence unless a parent/guardian excuses him/her with a note or a phone call to the main office. Staff will help make sure that if students walk out, it is done in an orderly fashion that does not disrupt our school day. Students must remain on campus during this time and are expected to return to class at 10:17.

We ask that you talk with your child regarding issues related to gun violence as we feel this is the most appropriate place for our students to have these conversations. We place the highest priority on the safety of our students and staff and will do everything we can to ensure a positive learning environment at Inver Grove Heights Middle School.

Attendance information

Attendance at school is very important to a student’s success. We realize that at times students must miss school. If your child is going to miss school please call the attendance line as soon as possible at 651-306-7878 and leave a message with your child’s name and grade. If a student misses 2 or more days we can request make-up work.

* If you are picking your child up from school early, please send a note with your child to the office in the morning. It can be a distraction to the class if we have to quickly get a child out of class.  Thank you for your understanding!

An Important Reminder for all students & parents…

All students must be accompanied by an adult in order to attend any home athletic events. This includes all middle school events as well as any high school events. We will turn students away at the door if they are not with an adult. Please know that a parent cannot just drop a student off for the night. They must buy a ticket and be in attendance during the event.
