Kindergarten FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Kindergarten

What time are classes?
Kindergarten runs on the district's elementary schedule, which is from 7:50 AM - 2:30 PM.

Can my child start school if their immunization records are not turned in?
No. In accordance with Minnesota State law, all required immunizations must be completed by the first day of school. Parents may get a legal exemption for medical reasons or conscientiously held beliefs. For more information, call your doctor or clinic.

Where can I get low-cost immunizations?
Low-cost immunizations are available through the Dakota County Public Health program. The suggested cost for each vaccination is $14, but no one who qualifies for vaccinations will be turned away if they are unable to pay the cost. For more information, please call Dakota County Public Health at 952-891-7999.

What do I have to do if my child needs to take medication at school?
When it is necessary for a student to receive prescription or non-prescription medication at school, the medication is kept in the Health Office, with the exception of inhalers, Epipens, or when special arrangements have been made. The student must have:
  • the medication in the original container
  • written permission from the parent
  • written order from the physician
Medication forms can be obtained from any school health office or through your elementary school's webpage when you click Health Services in the homepage's sidebar.

What if I cannot locate my child's birth certificate?
Multiple documents can serve as your child’s proof of age. County offices can provide a copy of your child's birth certificate for a fee. Additionally, if you do not have a birth certificate, the school district will also accept the following proof of age documents:
  • baptismal certificates
  • I-94 forms
  • passports
  • physician certificates
  • adoption certificates
  • affidavits from a parent
  • previous school records

What is School-Age Care (Spartan Kids' Care)?
School-age care is a fee-based childcare service available before school from 6:00-7:50 AM and after school from 2:30-6:00 PM. For more information on availability and rates, please contact the Spartan Kids' Care office at 651-306-7502.

How do I find out about busing information?
Busing information will be available through the parent portal, Infinite Campus. It will include approximate times for pick up and the location of the bus stop. More information is available on the Transportation webpage.

What if my child goes to a daycare?
There is a line provided on the Student Transportation Form for a daycare address. If the student will have different pick-up and drop-off addresses (takes one bus to school and a different bus home), that information should be completed on the transportation form. Transportation is provided for daycares that are located within the school’s attendance boundaries.

Does someone help my child to and from the bus?
For the first few weeks of school, the kindergarten teachers wait at the doors for the students when they get off the bus. Additionally, they are walked out to their buses after school. Badges are also provided for your child to wear every day for the first few weeks of school. A student’s name, address, daycare address (if applicable), bus route, school, parent’s name, and home phone number are listed on the badges.

Does my child need an Early Childhood screening to start kindergarten?
Yes. Minnesota State law requires that all children be screened before they start kindergarten. Screenings may be scheduled at 3203 68th St. E., Inver Grove Heights, MN 55076. Screenings are free and take about an hour. Please call 651-306-7520 or visit www.IGHEarlyLearning.org for more information or to schedule an appointment.

¡No!
