Outdoor classroom at IGH Middle SchoolInver Grove Heights Middle School classes now have more options to learn outside with the recent addition of an outdoor classroom. Schools have been using their outdoor spaces as much as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. IGH Middle School Counselor Jennell Garten saw students and staff sitting in the grass and on the sidewalks and wanted to give them another option. As part of the ISD 199 Wellness Committee, Ms. Garten heard about a grant for an outdoor classroom that was available through the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) program and applied for it.

The grant provided funds to buy building materials for the classroom. Ms. Garten asked Simley High School Industrial Technology Teacher Thom Fisher for help building classroom furniture. Once the building materials were purchased, Mr. Fisher’s woodworking students got to work. The Simley students built 16 benches and a stage, which are now set up in a courtyard on the east side of the middle school. Teachers who book the outdoor classroom also have access to a portable dry erase board to help with lessons.

Thanks to the addition of the outdoor classroom, classes now have more options to enjoy the nice weather while they can. Thank you to Ms. Garten for coordinating the grant and the outdoor classroom’s construction, Mr. Fisher and his Simley woodworking students for building the furniture, and the staff and students who helped set up the classroom!
