Simley Wind Ensemble Joins Consortium for Opportunities & Service

Simley Wind Ensemble works with composer on consortium pieceAt the beginning of March, composer Randall D. Standridge created a consortium and performance opportunity for bands around the world to raise awareness of mental health issues. Bands were able to "buy in," and proceeds went to the Jed Foundation, a non-profit organization that focuses on providing services and advocacy to school-age individuals and young adults who live with mental health conditions. Thanks to gifted funds from the IGH Band Boosters, the Simley High School Wind Ensemble was able to be part of the consortium. The band was also chosen to receive premiere rights to Mr. Standridge’s accompanying piece, “(not) Alone.”

"With 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 6 youths in the U.S. experiencing mental health issues each year, it is shocking and frustrating that so many people are reluctant to acknowledge, discuss, and address these issues,” Mr. Standridge said. “Thus, ‘(not) Alone’ was born.”

Simley Band Director Kevin Robinson said, "Mental health, especially while navigating this global pandemic, should be at the forefront especially with our youth."

Mr. Standridge, who acknowledged that he lives with depression and anxiety, thanked participating bands for supporting the creation of art that will, hopefully, spark important conversations.

“Thank you,” he said, “for helping us say in a loud, clear voice to the students in our classrooms suffering in silence, ‘You are NOT alone.’”

"One of the main reasons, Simley students, the boosters, and I are thrilled to be a part of this consortium is due to what this project and piece stand for,” Mr. Robinson said. “Not only do we get to perform an amazing work by a composer the students love, but we also have the amazing opportunity to help further important conversations."

The Simley Wind Ensemble will premiere “(not) Alone” at the Simley Spring Band Concert on June 2 at 7:30 PM. Simley is one of the few bands selected from across the world that has premiere rights to this piece until the end of 2022. The work will be available to the public upon release at the beginning of 2023.
