 Homebound Services 

Attendance is critical to a student’s learning, but we understand that significant health conditions or life events may occasionally keep students out of school. When a student is unable to attend school for an extended period, homebound services are designed to keep their education on track through a temporary instructional plan tailored to their specific needs.

Who is Eligible for Homebound Instruction?

A student in grades K-12 may be eligible for homebound instruction if they have been absent, or are medically predicted to be absent, from school for fifteen (15) or more school days. These absences must be due to physical illness, mental health needs, pregnancy, or a court-ordered placement.

To initiate homebound services, the district requires written and signed documentation from a recognized placing authority (e.g., a medical doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, or court-appointed authority). This documentation must explicitly state:

• The medical or legal reason requiring homebound services.
• The projected start and end date the student will be absent from and able to return to school.

Homebound for Students with Special Education Services

Homebound services are also available for students who currently receive special education services. If a student's medical or mental health condition requires them to be homebound:

• The student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) team will convene to determine the appropriate homebound services.
• Special education services must be provided as required by the IEP, to the extent that the student's medical treatment and condition allow them to participate.
• The IEP must be formally amended by the team to reflect the student’s temporary instructional needs before homebound services can begin.

Homebound Service Schedules

The schedule for homebound instruction is designed to maintain educational continuity while respecting the student's recovery.

• Standard Delivery: For students who are predicted to be out of school for fewer than 171 school days, the district provides one (1) hour of instruction per school day.
• Flexible Scheduling: These five (5) hours per week can be delivered in different configurations based on the student's health and family availability.
