The Simley High School Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble participated in the Minnesota State High School League Large Group Band Contest this year. Simley hosted the competition, and bands from North High School, Park High School, and Two Rivers High School participated as well. Simley was the only school to enter two bands into the competition.

The Simley Symphonic Band entered the contest despite being a young band with mostly ninth-grade students.

"This shows the willingness of my young band to learn and grow despite being the only young ensemble to participate in the event,” Simley Band Director Kevin Robinson said. “I am very proud of their performance as they received two Excellent ratings from the judges. They missed Superior by one point from one judge, which is the highest rating a band can receive."

The symphonic band performed a warm-up piece titled “Into the Blue” by Cait Nishimura and another piece titled “Aztec Fire” by Jay Bocook.

The Simley Wind Ensemble received all Superior ratings, continuing a 27-year streak of earning the highest rating in the MSHSL Large Group Band Contest. They performed a warm-up piece titled “Stillwater” by Kelijah Dunton followed by the standard wind band repertoire “Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst.

Congratulations to all of Simley’s band students for their dedication to making and sharing their music with others!
