Carol Nankivel, a retired soil scientist, taught Hilltop Elementary School 2nd graders about her work. She led an interactive lesson to get students thinking about different soil that plants grow in and what they need to survive and thrive. Students pretended to be plants growing in clay, loam, and sand. She talked with students about how each plant gets its water, what nutrients it gets, and how it grows differently based on the soil it’s in.
Students then had the opportunity to pot their own plants. They learned about the spider plant that they were potting, and they learned how to pack the soil to best support the plant’s growth. Thank you to Ms. Nankivel for the engaging lesson on soil and her help creating plants that students can care for and watch grow in their own homes

Carol Nankivel, una científica de suelos jubilada, enseñó a los alumnos de segundo grado de Hilltop Elementary School sobre su trabajo.
