Reminder to all 2019-2020 National Honor Society members that there is a mandatory member meeting this Wednesday, 4/24 at 7:15 AM in the Spartan Center!

Simley Boys Golf opened its Metro East season with a ringing victory at Bellwood Oaks Golf Course on Thursday, April 18th. Facing a rebuilding Henry Sibley and an always solid Hastings, the Spartans debuted their revamped lineup after graduating seven seniors in 2018 and did not miss a beat. High school athletics is about stepping up when it is your time and Junior Charlie Gustafson answered the bell. Playing in just his second varsity match in his golfing career, Charlie started with a bogey followed by the first team snowman of the 2019 campaign on his second hole. Rather than hanging his head, Charlie rallied to play the last seven holes in even par to bring in a solid 40 in the 6th position and cement the victory for the Spartans. Senior Captain Ben Borchard never gave in to an uncooperative swing to post another gutsy 40, while Freshman Josh Painter played a typically Josh adventurous round balancing doubles and birdies to card the third 40 of the day. But the day belonged to meet medalist Sophomore Zach Painter who blistered his driver off the tee splitting the fairways and rode a hot putter, only 13 putts, to a stress-free two over par 38, just the kind of round the coach likes to see. The Spartans turned in a fine team score of 158 besting Hastings by 10 strokes and Henry Sibley by 40 on a blustery day with highly gusting winds. Good start Simley linksters.

The Spartan Baseball Team found their way back into the win column Saturday afternoon with a win over section opponent Bloomington Kennedy. The weather heated up, and so did the Spartan’s bats, pounding out 14 hits, and scoring 11 runs.

The Spartans were lead at the plate by sophomores Ben Vujovich and Cael Berg. Vujovich finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and complimented Cael Berg’s 3 for 3 and 3 RBI performance. Wyatt Rogers, Ben Briguet, Mitch Tschida, Trent Peterson, and Noah Roitman were all also credited with RBI’s in the win.

On the mound, Connor Follman got his first start of the season. Follman went 3 solid innings, scattering 4 hits and allowing only one run. In addition to performing well at the plate, Ben Vujovich also brought home a win on the mound. Vujovich went 3 innings, gave up 4 hits and allowed 2 runs while striking out 3.

Defensively, the Spartans played one of their better games of the year, only making 1 error in 7 innings of play.
