The Simley girls golf team hosted their first home match of the season Wednesday at Inver Wood against south conference opponent Hastings. Despite it being the first time that the Spartans were able to play 9 holes on their own course, the Spartans arrived ready to defend their home turf. Sophomore Sophia Roche quickly calmed her nerves after the first hole, and made a strong showing in her first ever varsity conference match. Senior captains Molly Illetschko and Rachael Wolfe put their experience and leadership on display, showing their teammates what it takes to overcome a few bad breaks and grind out a good score for their team, even when the ball was not bouncing their way. Junior Anna Ahern showed that her game was headed in the right direction, playing steady the entire round and putting in a critical score for her team. The strong all-around team performance was highlighted by great rounds from Junior Jordan Juers and 7th grader Reese McCauley. Juers had her career low round. Her great ball striking and power off tee earned her a tie for second in the match, and put on display the type of golf that her teammates and coach know she is capable of playing. McCauley put an exclamation point on her round by birdieing her last hole of the day with a perfect 20-foot putt. McCauley earned medalist honors for the second straight match by taming the difficult championship front nine with a smooth 39. The Spartans earned the victory over Hastings 183-190.

The Spartan Baseball team took on crosstown foe, Henry Sibley Wednesday afternoon in a Metro East Conference matchup. Looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance the day prior, the Spartans did not disappoint.

The bats were active early as the Spartans sent 9 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 5 runs. The offense stayed steady throughout the game pounding out 12 hits and scoring 9 runs to propel them to victory. The Spartans also took advantage of the 5 fielding errors from the Warriors in this offensive outburst.

Just as impressive as the offense, was the pitching performance from Sophomore Ben Vujovich. Vujovich went a complete game, scattering 6 hits and giving up only 1 run. He backed up scattering the 6 hits by striking out 5 and walking only 2. In addition to the stellar pitching performance, the defense kept a clean slate not making a single error.

It was a complete game put together by the Spartans and they will look to keep the momentum rolling tomorrow afternoon as they travel to take on the defending state champions, the Mahtomedi Zephyrs.
