Baseball beats Defending State Champs

On Thursday night, the Spartan Baseball team made the trek over to Mahtomedi for a conference match up, looking to win their second game in a row. The day prior, the Spartans offense came alive pounding out 12 hits and scoring 9 runs. Today, the story was no different. The Spartans tattooed Mahtomedi’s pitching staff for another 12 hits and 10 runs. The offense is firing on all cylinders scoring 19 runs in the past two games. Though there was a ton of contributions from the offense today, a few standouts really put the Spartans ahead. The offense was lead by senior duo Noah Roitman and Wyatt Rogers. The two of the combined for 4 hits and 5 RBI’s on the day none more timely than a Rogers triple and a Roitman double. In addition to the senior duo, junior Shane Prifrel had a breakout day going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Behind every good offense is a good defense. Defensively, the Spartans were anchored by Junior pitcher Trent Peterson. Peterson pitched 6+ innings scattering 6 hits and giving up 5 earned runs, and was pulled due to pitch count restrictions. Sophomore Nathan Fischer came in relief and closed out the victory for the Spartans.

Today was a complete team win and a huge win for the program. The Spartans will finish the week playing in the border battle tomorrow vs rival South Saint Paul. First pitch slated for 4:15 at McGuire Field in South Saint Paul.
