Rivalries always bring out the best in the underdog and the Simley Boys Golf team’s match against all-time rival South St. Paul was no exception. The day before the match the coach preached focus and the players responded with yawns. The next day, Thursday, May 2nd, the Packers played their best golf of the season at Inver Wood golf course and the yawns turned into grimaces as Spartan shots found the trees and putts avoided the holes. All were reminded that golf is the most humbling of games. But as challenging and frustrating as the day was, this team of Simley golfers continued to battle until the end. The end, which found the Spartans and Packers tied with a team score of 162, came down to the first tie-breaker – the fifth best individual score per team. Where South St. Paul found their tiebreaker score to be 45, 8thgrader Caden Renslow, playing in the first varsity match of his golfing career, finished his round with two smooth putts on the final green and a score that added up to 43 to break the Packers hearts and allow Simley to escape and remain in 2ndplace in the Metro East. Never boring Freshman Josh Painter was co-medalist with 38 strokes by somehow getting up and down from near the practice green after airmailing the 9thgreen to save par, while the overly analytical Junior Alex Guggisberg parred out the end of his round for a fine thirty-nine and Senior Ben Borchard finished strongly to add to the victory. The Spartans also defeated North St. Paul in the triangular meet.

Girls Golf Continues Record Setting Play

They say that records are meant to be broken. It seems that the Simley girls golf team has taken that saying to heart. For the second time this week the Spartans set a new school record. This time by beating the 9-hole team record they set on Tuesday by two strokes, breaking the record before the ink even had a chance to dry. All six players turned in fantastic scores on their way to the best all-around team performance in school history, and a first-place finish in the 8-team conference match at Keller Golf Club. Junior Anna Ahern started the round with an easy two-putt par on the first hole, and navigated the rest of the round with great drives and solid putting to finish out her lowest round this year. Senior Captain Molly Illetschko continued her great play this season with fireworks early in her round when she birdied the second hole. Illetschko kept her game face on for the rest of her round to card her second-best 9-hole score of the season. Junior Jordan Juers, not to be outdone by her teammates great play, used great ball striking and smart decision making to finish out her second-best round of 2019. Senior captain Rachael Wolfe smashed her way around the Keller Golf Club. Her birdie on the par-four fifth hole, and a great save on the 9th paved the way for Wolfe to finish in 7th place individually in the 45-player tournament. Seventh grader Reese McCauley had another round to remember. Reese’s one-over 36 featured a birdie on the par-five third hole, and a stellar 9-hole putting performance that helped her finish in second place individually. Reese needed only 14 putts on the difficult Keller greens. Freshman Isabella McCauley started quickly by making a two-foot birdie putt on the first hole, and never looked back. Bella broke her own school record by shooting a three under par 32 that included four birdies and only one bogie. Bella earned medalist honors for the match, and more ink in the school record book. The record team score of 158 secured the victory for the Spartans, and put them into first place in the Metro East Conference.

Tre took third place in long jump with a jump of 17ft 2 inches, 3rd in the high jump, and finished 7th in both the 100 and 200 meter dash.
