New Announcements:

Girls Golf wins conference 9 hole. Juniors Alexa Lynner, Alyssa Running, and Ella Tuccitto all played in the first varsity match of their careers. Lynner found the highlight of her first varsity match when she hit a beautiful tee shot to the green on the par 3 7th. Running may have had the best shot of the tournament when she sent an 8 iron on a straight line to the pin on the second, settling within 3 feet of the cup. Tuccitto and Skappel both blasted drives on the par 5, 5th hole on their way to solid rounds for the team. Sophomore captain Reese McCauley was her usual steady self, and capped a great round with a tremendous recovery on the par 5 6th hole that included a beautiful 9 iron to the green. Senior Captain Bella McCauley started her last season as a Spartan off in style. Bella finished her round with a perfectly struck 6 iron to the green on the final hole, leaving her an easy two putt to finish with a two-under par round of 34, and medalist honors in the match. If this first match is any indication of things to come, it will be a very fun and competitive season in the Metro East. Go Spartans!

The 2022 Simley Boys Golf season started out as expected with comfortable wins over South St. Paul and North St. Paul. Youth was served as Sophomore Justin Orn was the medalist for the team and the event – his name will look good in the newspaper – with a sizzling one over par 37 at Manitou Ridge, a course that can be taken down with solid straight shots but where round destroying dangers lurk on several holes. Justin’s score was highlighted by three birdies on the day. Freshman Elias Boone, in his first true varsity start, was plucky throughout his round with seven pars on the day before the water monster that feeds in the water to the right of the final hole decided to rear its ugly head and keep Eli out of the newspaper. His round was highlighted by an unverified 302-yard drive (his coach takes freshman estimated driving yardages with a grain of salt). Senior Josh Painter (who showed great leadership and grit after a few bad breaks) and Junior Joey Stanton (who birdied the last hole by draining a splendid 13-foot putt after two solid shots) rounded out the scoring by Simley posting bookend 41’s to lead the Spartan’s to a very satisfying opening sweep.
