Charlie Thompson
Why do you want to be a member of the ISD 199 School Board?
I am a parent and want to do my part to ensure a quality education in a safe and inclusive environment for students. I believe this can be accomplished by providing resources and support to our teachers, staff, and administration. I also believe in good governance and generously serving the community with time, talent, and treasure.
What experience do you bring to this position? How have your experiences prepared you to fulfill the responsibilities of a school board member?
I have 12 years of experience as a nonprofit executive. Currently, I am President and CEO of Neighbors, Inc. In this role, I have worked in partnership with a board of directors, staff, volunteers, as well as people in need. This experience will aid me in serving on the school board. Additionally, I have a master’s degree and experience teaching at a community college. Finally, I am a parent. I want to serve our kiddos and support them in their journey to become successful adults.
What are the most important issues concerning the Inver Grove Heights School District, and how would you address them?
Safety. Inclusion. Resources. Good governance.
As we move through and beyond the pandemic, we must continue to consult experts on current guidelines to keep our children, teachers, and staff safe.
We must ensure that all children feel welcome and that we lean into what can be uncomfortable discussions around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Our educators must have the resources necessary to teach our children. That means staying on top of our fiscal health and appropriately budgeting and monitoring our finances.
Finally, the issues listed above won't matter if the tone at the top is dysfunctional. We need to continue the reputation of good governance by the board of directors.
