After completing their internships, students in the TriDistrict Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) program presented at the TriDistrict CAPS Spring Showcase. Simley High School, South St. Paul High School, and Two Rivers High School students presented about their experiences in class and in the field to the teachers, administrators, family members, local professionals, and post-secondary staff who attended.
The TriDistrict CAPS classes – Business and Entrepreneurship, Computer Science and IT, Healthcare, and Transportation and Skilled Trades – are open to all incoming juniors and seniors. Students took classes that fit with their future goals and classes that gave them brand-new experiences.
“I originally wanted to be a pediatric nurse, but then speakers came in to talk about occupational therapy.” Simley senior Ashleigh Skappel said. “I had never heard of occupational therapy before, so I’m really glad I did this class. It really opened up my eyes to the whole medical field.”
Ashleigh added that she has decided to pursue occupational therapy as a career after interning at Therapy OPS, a pediatric therapy clinic for occupational, physical, and speech therapy.
Other students held internships at hospitals, marketing firms, animal clinics, automotive repair shops, and many other local businesses that gave them a first-hand look at daily responsibilities. While the TriDistrict CAPS experiences reinforced some students’ career aspirations, other students discovered that certain careers weren’t for them.
“I was deciding between electrical engineering and computer science, and because of my experiences with this [class], I was able to cross computer science off my list,” TriDistrict CAPS Computer Science and IT student Tyler Schneider said. “Even if I didn’t enjoy it the way I thought I would, now I know that, when I’m going into college, that’s not something I should pursue.”
Students completed their classes with professional experience that will give them an advantage as they enter the workforce. They also gained an understanding of what they want for their future, using their experiences in the risk-free TriDistrict CAPS classes to inform their decisions about college and career.

Después de completar sus pasantías, los estudiantes del programa TriDistrict Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) se presentaron en TriDistrict CAPS Spring Showcase. Los estudiantes de Simley High School, South St. Paul High School y Two Rivers High School presentaron sus experiencias en clase y en el campo a los maestros, administradores, familiares, profesionales locales y personal postsecundario que asistieron.
Las clases CAPS de TriDistrict (Negocios y Emprendimiento, Informática y TI, Salud, Transporte y Oficios Especializados) están abiertas a todos los estudiantes de tercer y cuarto año que ingresan. Los estudiantes tomaron clases que encajaban con sus metas futuras y clases que les brindaron experiencias completamente nuevas.
“Originalmente quería ser enfermera pediátrica, pero luego llegaron los oradores para hablar sobre la terapia ocupacional”. dijo Ashleigh Skappel, estudiante de último año de Simley. “Nunca antes había oído hablar de la terapia ocupacional, así que estoy muy contenta de haber hecho esta clase. Realmente me abrió los ojos a todo el campo de la medicina”.
Ashleigh agregó que decidió dedicarse a la terapia ocupacional como carrera después de hacer una pasantía en Therapy OPS, una clínica de terapia pediátrica para terapia ocupacional, física y del habla.
Otros estudiantes realizaron pasantías en hospitales, empresas de marketing, clínicas de animales, talleres de reparación de automóviles y muchas otras empresas locales que les dieron una visión de primera mano de las responsabilidades diarias. Si bien algunas experiencias de TriDistrict CAPS reforzaron las aspiraciones profesionales de los estudiantes, otros estudiantes descubrieron que ciertas carreras no eran para ellos.
“Estaba decidiendo entre ingeniería eléctrica e informática, y debido a mis experiencias con esta [clase], pude tachar la informática de mi lista”, dijo Tyler Schneider, estudiante de informática y TI de TriDistrict CAPS. “Incluso si no lo disfruté de la manera que pensé que lo haría, ahora sé que, cuando vaya a la universidad, eso no es algo que deba seguir”.
Los estudiantes completaron la clase con experiencia profesional que les dará una ventaja cuando ingresen a la fuerza laboral. También adquirieron una comprensión de lo que quieren para su futuro, utilizando sus experiencias en las clases libres de riesgo TriDistrict CAPS para informar sus decisiones sobre la universidad y la carrera.
